What is the purpose of the Toy Project ?

The Sheriff's Toy Project functions as a charitable arm of the Sacramento Sheriff's Department wherein participants of the Sheriff's Work Project spend their court ordered jail sentence making toys and refurbishing donated bicycles.  Through partnerships with organizations such as YES (Youth Education Sports) and the Salvation Army, we distribute toys, bicycles and other items to children in need throughout the Sacramento region, including donations to the Mustard Seed School, a school for homeless children.

The Sheriff's Toy Project also services as a local outreach program between the Sacramento County Sheriff department and our community and provides significant relief to an overcrowded jail system, which also reduces cost for the citizens of Sacramento County.

How does the program work?

Referrals for recipient families come through our Sheriff's Service Centers, Sheriff's deputies, detectives, probation officers, social service agencies, schools and other local non-profit organizations.

In addition to our annual holiday toy and food give-away, the Sheriff's Toy Project helps fund the Santa Clause Project, where Sheriff's Deputies distribute stockings and gifts each Christmas Eve to children in area hospitals who are undergoing chemotherapy or suffering from other illnesses.

Do you only help during the Christmas season?

Though we emphasize the winter holiday season, we also fill special requests throughout the year from individuals and families in need, as well as from schools and agencies serving the less fortunate in and around our community.

How many people have you helped?

Operating since 1984, the Sheriff's Toy Project has provided less fortunate children in our community with over 75,000 gifts.  We have refurbished over 6,400 bicycles.  Last Christmas, we gave away food boxes and gifts to more than 1,400 families, with each child up to 17 years of age receiving an average of 3 gifts.

What are the benefits of the project?

Children going without receive the special attention and care they need and desire from the local community.  The positive interaction between children and the law enforcement community often restores a child's confidence and helps him develop trustworthy relationships.

The Sheriff's Toy Project serves as an outreach program for members of the Sheriff's Department as they work together to build strong ties within their community.

Offenders feel a great sense of accomplishment during and upon completion of their court ordered sentences by serving less fortunate children at our facility.  In fact, many offenders request to volunteer at the Sheriff's Toy Project after completing their sentences.
